The Costa Blanca is more and more chosen as an ideal location to spend your holidays!
The weather at the Costa Blanca in Spain is by many considered as the most pleasant of Europe. La Marina is a cosy coastal village, with nice Spanish restaurants, bodegas (wine farms), and in the urbanization several shopping centres. The beach is broad and always very clean, and even in high-season there is alway plenty of room to put down a towel or set up a parasol. Restaurants at or near the beach serve a variety of mediterranean and continental dishes, at very reasonable prices. You can have breakfast, lunch and diner at these restaurants, or just drop by for a beer a jug of Sangria, or a good Spanish wine. There are daily flighst from all over Europe that fly to the airport of Alicante, which is about 25 kilometers from the house. When booking early (with for instance Ryanair) the flights can be very cheap, and it is possible to get return flight for wel under fifty euro’s.
The public transportation in Spain is in general quite good and not expensive at all. Furthermore there are a lot of car rental companies. The house is situated in the urbanization, on a quiet place, with a small park at both the front and the back of the house.
Shops and the ‘mercadillo’ (marketplace) are both at walking distance from the house. The beach is 5-10 minutes by car, or 15 minutes by bike (which can be rented in the village). La Marina is centraly located between some nice cities and sights.
Ideas for trips:
Alicante is a beatifull old city with a big harbour, a boulevard and a large number of bars, restaurants and shops. Alicante is also home to the largest airport in the area. Alicante is the capital of the province of Alicante, and has a long and rich history. A glimpse of this old history can be experienced at the Castle of Santa Barbara, the Basilica of Santa Maria, and the Sint Nicolas Cathedral. Next to the churches and castles there is also a nice museum, a very large number of shops, and a nice beach.
Tabarca is an island very near to the coast. The island is well known for its pirating history, and is especially popular with Spanish tourists. More information about Tabarca can be found on this webpage.
Torrevieja is situated about 20 kilometers south of La Marina, and is well known for its salt lakes (Salinas). Many salinas are used for the reclamation of salt, however more and more have been turned into nature reserves. Flamingos flourish here, and can been seen by the dozens. Next to these nature reserves Torrevieja has some nice churches, and of course a nice beach with plenty of restaurants and bars.
Orihuela, once the capital of a kingdom, is an especially beautifull old town, about 25 kilometers west of La Marina. Orihuela has a large number of churches, and has a lot of Moors (descents from Berber, Black African and Arabis) influences. There is a small hiking trail leading to the top of the mountain, where you will find an old monastery and a fabulous view. A visit to this town is definitely worth while!
Valencia is a bit of a longer drive, but when visiting for three days or more defenitively worth visiting. The city has an old city centre, and is home to the artworks of Calantrava. Instead of taking the toll road to Valencia, take the N332, and you can enjoy wonderful views all along the way, with nice viewpoints, and picturesque coastal villages. Valencia is about a two and a half hours drive from la Marina.
You have not experienced true Spanish culture if you haven’t visited one of the big markets (mercadillos). De market of Los Montesinos is the biggest in the area, and nicely situated at a lake. This market opens every sunday morning and is open untill about 13.00. This market is highley recommended. A short overview of the local markets:
Los Montesinos: Sundays ( situated on the N332 in the direction of Torrevieja; Map
La Marina: Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays
